“When I was honorably discharged from the military, the challenges I faced were lack of networking in the civilian world, which put me at a disadvantage. Also, in the military, most roles require technical skills, but in the civilian world it often demands formal certifications or degrees that I did not have at the time of my discharge.

When I was discharged from the military in 1987, there weren’t many support resources available to me—or at least none that I was aware of. I felt like a fish out of water trying to find meaningful, well-paying employment. To gain experience and get my foot in the door, I enrolled in college and took on temporary jobs through staffing agencies while searching for permanent opportunities. Looking back, I really wish I had known about an organization like Operation: Job Ready Veterans at that time. It would have made a world of difference in my transition.

As a result of working with Operation: Job Ready Veterans, I received job placement organizational connections as a job seeker with employers. OJRV offers career guidance, training, resume support, and skills as well as interview preparation. OJRV helps streamline the process of finding a position (job) with transitioning from one job to another, which helped me find a suitable role as an Employment Transition Manager within their organization.
