“After leaving the military, I relocated to be closer to family and assist in caregiving for my mother. However, I encountered medical setbacks and struggled to find employment that provided a sustainable income. Despite having a background as an Army officer, educator, and coach (of wrestling and judo), along with earning a bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees, and 94 additional graduate credits, I found myself questioning whether I had truly been successful, at least in terms of the usual metrics of success.

With the support of OJRV, I received resume reviews, placement assistance, and retention support. Through this process, I gained not only job opportunities but also a renewed sense of self-importance. I am now working as a direct support specialist, assisting children with autism, and I have come to understand that success and fulfillment are not measured by the tally of dollars in my bank account but in service in giving others.

I am grateful to Ms. Dart and OJRV for helping me fully understand that through all of my life’s travails, I have been a success for the betterment of mankind. In my current role, I find fulfillment in making a positive difference in another person’s life, and that, I have realized, is the greatest success of all.”
