Success Story
Gregory
My transition from military to civilian life wasn’t too difficult: shortly after separation, I enrolled in college. I then started my first job in I.T. support field. Unfortunately, after 20+ years of successful employment, I got laid off due to company downsizing.
After trying to find employment on my own, I soon realized that my resume writing and interviewing skills were quite inadequate. It was clear to me that I needed some help. That’s when I was referred to the” JOB READY VETERANS” seminar by Beverly Fitch.
The seminar helped me tremendously. It taught me how to write a professional resume and to prepare for and conduct a successful interview.
Currently I work at the Internet Café/Computer Lab at VA Facility, as a Lab Technician where I assist Veterans with computer skills, setting up email accounts and finding employment.
I also co- facilitate a weekly Job Club where veterans have the opportunity to discuss with fellow comrades the barriers they face with transition and finding employment. I have already informed many of them about OJRV’s next seminar and many appeared to be interested.
After a 27-year career in the Army, 21 years being active duty, I knew I would need help with this transition. I had some experience over the years working in sales as a civilian. The OJRV team gave me tools and confidence in this weeklong seminar that would help create a successful transition from active duty to civilian.
Although I was uncertain what I would be doing next, during the seminar, the team helped me build a solid resume using what I did over the last 27 years in the Army and putting it into civilian terms. They talked to me about the benefits I have available to me. They also prepared me for job interviews.
Now in 2021, I am a full-time student at Indiana Tech working towards my Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership. Spring of 2021, I started MCB Elite Lawn Care, LLC., and I’m confident there is much more beyond the horizon.
I can’t thank the OJRV Team enough! Veterans and family members, take the time to connect with this organization.
