“The most significant challenge I faced after leaving the military was the feeling of not being ‘qualified’ or sometimes being ‘overqualified.’ Most jobs I applied for went with other candidates over me, and most couldn’t tell me why I was not chosen for the position.
I participated in OJRV’s resume writing, interview techniques, and social media and networking, specifically LinkedIn, courses. Each training provided was extremely helpful in building my confidence. My ETM, Kristal Watts, was the best, and most constant source of positive support, because I was a little lost and felt defeated by the ‘no’s’ that I received. She was so patient and knowledgeable with all my questions and concerns and made me feel better about my employment searches and job opportunities.
As a result of this assistance, I have been accepted to a wonderful position in the healthcare field as a material distribution specialist with an employer who is willing to work with my busy schedule. I became more confident in my interview techniques (even negotiating for a pay raise during the hiring process), and my resume has received more refinement for future job searches.
Thanks to OJRV and the Call of Duty Endowment, I have restarted my life after separating from an organization that I dedicated 10 years of my life to. Working with my ETM Kristal Watts has been amazing. She has the best patience ever. I am excited that my skills have sharpened because of all the help I have received from Kristal Watts. I am confident that no matter what my calls are about, she is willing to help me. I have recommended all my fellow veteran friends and even my sister to reach out to her. This organization does care about veterans, and I am so grateful.”
